7 TIPS TO STOP BARKING

Some canine behavior problems, such as housesoiling, affect only a dog’s owners. However, problems such as escaping and excessive barking can result in neighborhood disputes and violations of animal control ordinances. Therefore, barking dogs can become “people problems.”

Continual barking for long periods of time is a sign that your dog has a problem that needs to be addressed.

Why do dogs bark?

  • Lack of engagement

  • Lack of enrichment

  • Lack of exercise

  • Territorial

  • Fear

  • Overarousal/drive

I have told my dog to stop, but they won’t listen!

Dog’s do not come with ‘built-in’ commands, just as humans don’t come with innate skills. We have to learn. If you have told your dog to stop barking and they continue to bark even after receiving a punishment, it is likely you need to go back to the basics and teach them what no actually means.

What can I do to prevent my dog from barking?

  1. Exercise your dog by playing interactive games such as tug or fetch.

  2. Spend time training tricks or useful commands to mentally exhaust your dog.

  3. Enrichment toys, such as Kongs or West Paws, stuffed with rehydrated dog food and then frozen can entertain your dog for awhile.

  4. Avoid triggers by keeping your dog kenneled inside and away from windows and glass doors.

  5. Time away to adequately decompress from noises, children, and overstimulation can reduce stress barking.

  6. Don’t talk to dogs behind fences. This increases their level of frustration and likelihood of barking.

  7. Aid collars, such as bark collars or e-collars, are effective when used under the guidance of a professional trainer.

What if I tried all of these things and they still continue to bark?

Barking can stem from several different issues, so it’s important to speak with a certified and reputable trainer who specializes in behavior, not just obedience. Once speaking with a trainer, speak with your neighbors and others affected by the noise and let them know you are taking steps to resolve the issue rather than allowing tension to rise.

As a note: this is an issue I work with clients on frequently. While barking can not be solved overnight, it CAN be resolved effectively with patience, a willingness to learn new methods, and commitment to your dog’s success.

I would love to work with you and your dog on overcoming this common behavioral issue.

Good dog. Better you. Best life.
