Functional Training

A command that I find superfluous is ‘sit’. It’s so engrained in our head that it’s something we need to train our dog to do, yet have you ever stopped to question why we train this command? What purpose does ‘sit’ serve?

We ask a dog to sit because, by default, they can’t jump, they can’t pace, and it shows their obedience. However, when you think about it, putting a dog in any other command (such as a down-stay), solves the same issues.

When training your dog, think it through. When you have a clear understanding of why you are asking something, not only will it be easier to communicate to your dog, but you will also have more reason, more motivation, and more opportunities to train that behavior.

This also can narrow down exactly what you need to train allowing you to really master a few useful commands than be ‘okay’ at several that have no real purpose.
